You can do from home used to be a matter of scanning the Sunday classifieds for offers to get rich quick by stuffing envelopes.
Now, exposure to at-home employment opportunities has exploded, and a wide range of job ads are just a mouse click away. But so are the scams.
In 2007, when The Rat Race Rebellion began tracking at-home jobs, there were 30 scams for every legitimate opportunity. Now, with 4,500 to 5,000 work-at-home job ads screened weekly, the website finds 60 phonies for every one that's for real, says Christine Durst, co-founder and principal of Staffcentrix LLC, the company that owns and manages RatRaceRebellion.com.
Nevertheless, there's no shortage of people who dream of beating the odds and earning a living from home.
Durst, whose company Staffcentrix develops home-based and virtual career training programs, says people interested in work-at-home jobs primarily are:
Parents who say they want to spend more time with their children
Trailing military spouses who, according to Durst, by virtue of their spouse's career need to pick up and move every few years
Retirees needing supplemental income
People with disabilities
It's difficult to be a good parent and simultaneously work well at home, says Durst, because most jobs require blocks of uninterrupted time to accomplish tasks, and children's schedules are less than predictable. For those who do choose to walk the tightrope between paid work and parenting, consider deadline-oriented work. Durst says it's generally better for those with younger children than schedule-oriented hourly work.
Steven Rothberg, president and founder of CollegeRecruiter.com, says "an increasing minority" of entry-level workers, are attracted to these gigs. He says he believes social introverts make good candidates. "They like working with people (but) they like interacting by email and by being on the phone. They dislike working in person with a lot of others," he says, because of meetings and other "time-sucking problems" at an office.
Self-motivation, discipline, job skills and independence are key characteristics for at-home workers, says Stephanie Foster, a former medical transcriptionist who runs the website HomeWithTheKids.com.
Employers may check your credit before making an employment decision. See what they see by checking your credit report at myBankrate.
A growing number of employers appear to believe telecommuting is a good deal for them as well. It reduces overhead expenses, allows access to talented workers who may not be available locally, provides off-hours support and helps retain employees, says Sara Sutton Fell, CEO of FlexJobs.com, a website that aggregates hand-screened telecommuting/work-at-home jobs. "We've seen a real broadening of the audience of both employers and job seekers."
Consider these 10 jobs -- some rather traditional and others unexpected -- for interesting at-home work and good (if competitive) prospects.
Virtual assistant
This is a field with much potential, in part because the title description covers many things. "You can fit your offerings to what you know how to do," says Foster. One can own a virtual assistant business or work from home for a company that makes you available to other employees or clients. HomeWithTheKids.com, for example, currently features several such companies. Small businesses hire virtual assistants to help when they can't justify a permanent employee. The International Virtual Assistants Association, which Durst co-founded in the 1990s, began with 28 members and has grown to more than 600 and charges from $15 per hour to more than $100 per hour.
Medical transcriptionist
As Foster knows, being a medical receptionist is a demanding job, and nearly every company listed on her site seeks applicants with experience and/or training from certain schools. The work involves listening to and typing up dictation from doctors -- some of whom have difficult accents, slur words together, and even "eat, drink, chew gum (and) talk to other people in the room" while dictating, she says. But hearing about medical matters can be interesting, and good transcriptionists are in very high demand. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics' 2010 data, the median hourly rate for transcriptionists is $15.82.
Google AdWords is a fast and simple way to expand the reach of your website. It’s a marketing tool that can offer instant results and huge rewards. It’s also highly measurable which means you can make regular adjustments to your strategy in order to improve your results, as Adrian Bold explains.
When users perform an internet search, the results are assessed and ranked, with the closest match appearing higher up the page. This “organic” SEO is based on criteria, including content, headers, page titles, internal links, links back to the site from other reliable websites and much more.
On the search results page there will also be sponsored links on the right-hand side and sometimes at the top of the page. These adverts are generated through Google AdWords. Businesses bid on keywords and if they win they appear higher up the page, giving their website maximum exposure.
Advertising in this way allows you to connect with customers at the moment they are searching for a product or service. You only pay when a customer clicks through your site (known as pay-per-click or PPC). So assuming your advert and keywords accurately represent your business, you can obtain prospects that can be converted into sign ups, sales, or whatever result your campaign was created to achieve.
Google AdWords provides you with full control and the ability to manage and measure your campaigns. It’s more versatile than a print ad; rather than paying for it to be seen by everybody that buys a newspaper, you only need to pay for relevant customers to see it.
The benefit of Google AdWords is that you can test a campaign and then analyse the results so you can make informed adjustments. You aren't tied into a lengthy agreement and there is no minimum spend, so you can start your campaigns small as you learn the skills.
Bidding and keyword selection
It’s advisable to use automatic bidding when you’re starting out to keep the process as simple as possible. It’s easy to keep control of your investment as you can set a maximum daily budget for your campaign. You can also set a maximum cost-per-click (CPC) rate to prevent the system from spending more than you want per keyword.
Your keywords can be researched using an online tool such as Google’s own free keyword tool. You should refine and organise your keywords into tightly themed groups and they should each have different bids, advert copy and landing pages. This makes tracking the results easier and also means you won’t be competing against yourself with keyword bids.
It’s important to try out your keywords by doing searches yourself. See if your competitors are using Google AdWords. If you run a hotel in London you will have thousands of competitors, so this means being more creative with your keywords. What is your Unique Selling Point (USP) — which words make your business stand out from the crowd? If there aren’t any adverts appearing when you do a keyword search it means you’ll be able to snag the top spot for a lower cost, and it means your click-through-rate (CTR) will be higher as you’ve chosen specific keywords relevant to your business.
Consumers search for products and services, so avoid using your company name in your ad title unless your goal is brand awareness. As with any advertising, it’s important to make your ad distinctive, so highlight what makes your business better than the rest — special offers and promotions are a great way to draw traffic to your site.
Whilst your bid influences the position of your ad on the page, AdWords also rewards you for writing relevant ads, so if your CTR is high then you may appear above another ad that has bid more than you for a keyword. This means the more skilled you become at producing successful campaigns, the less your future campaigns will cost.
As your confidence grows, keep expanding your campaigns by adding new ad groups using a wider variety of keywords. There are lots of professional solutions to help you with keyword selection.
Experimenting with pay-per-click advertising
Google has a free tool to help you monitor and evaluate your campaign. With conversion tracking you can see what happens after a user has clicked through to your website. You can monitor which words led the consumer to take your desired action.
For instance, if the objective of your online advertising is to improve your e-marketing database, then you could set your website up to track customers at the point when the “thank you for signing up to receive our e-newsletter” page is generated.
You will clearly be able to see whether keyword #1 or keyword #2 was the most effective at getting customers to sign up to your mailing list. You can then tweak your campaign to focus more on the best-performing keyword that will give you a greater return from your investment.
PPC display options
When you set up a Google AdWords account, you will be asked if you want to place your ads on the Display Network. This is another route to advertise your business, and it’s very different from a sponsored link that appears on a search results page.
If you chose to advertise on the Display Network it means your ad will be placed on sites owned by Google and its partners. The sites chosen would be relevant to your market.
For instance, if you ran an online shop selling DIY products your ad might appear on a DIY forum website. The visitors to the forum may be your target market, but they may just be looking for DIY advice when they visit the site. This means they will only click through your advert if they are given a compelling reason to do so. You have the option to manage your own display placement using Google’s placement tool, or let Google decide where to place the ads for you.
Initially, it’s a good idea to turn off the option to appear on the Google Display Network. Start by mastering the Google Search and Google Search Partners before branching out and expanding your advertising. As you gain more experience you can use Display Network ads if you feel they are relevant to your online marketing strategy, although create a separate campaign if you decide to try this; remember they require a very different approach.
Google and internet advertising
Google is continuing to roll out ways to dominate the online advertising industry and this is only going to expand. With its new "bid-per-call" system (which is aimed at businesses that still receive a high volume of leads through phone calls), and the roll out of Google+ earlier this year, Google is constantly evolving and refining the ways that your business can invest in cost-effective advertising.
If you have a website and you want to reach new customers, then Google AdWords offers an immediate solution. Have a go yourself, or speak to an expert, and start to increase your web traffic instantly.

With the help of Pinterest, which now integrates browsing and shopping features, social shopping has progressed from a fad to a legitimate way of buying online.
Mainstream marketplaces like Amazon, eBay, Newegg, and dozens of retailer sites are our go-to online shopping destinations. Rather than spending a day walking around a mall, many people now spend hours on visually pleasing product sites that make wish-listing easy and rewarding.
The Wordless Web of Pretty Pictures and Social Reassurance Social shopping sites integrate social aspects, such as product sharing and front-facing user engagement. But social shopping as we know it today wasn't always as straightforward. A mere five years ago social shopping usually meant a brand had a Facebook page, Twitter handle, and sharing buttons on their retail website. Now it's much more.
Social shopping fills a fundamental desire for social interaction and decision reassurance, and helps you mitigate the isolation inherent to most online activities. For many, shopping from a screen simply isn't as rewarding as walking into a store and making a purchase, so social shopping aims to recreate the best parts of in-store shopping.
At a social shopping site, you browse product feeds curated specifically for you, and the process of collective shopping helps to reaffirm and guide your purchase decisions.
Social shopping sites are constantly launching in the hopes of becoming the Next Big Thing. But the most successful ones don't actually make social buying aspects prominent, focusing instead on making shopping seem fun and buying and sharing seem natural. Shopping sites fall into informal categories based on their product offerings, including one-stops-shops such as Fab.com or fashion-based stores such as Polyvore. Certain social shopping sites create unique ways of combining social buying with online shopping but do not fall into any specific category, such as Ownza.com. Here's our list of the top 10 social shopping sites right now.
In a world where attention is currency, it's becoming increasingly more difficult to attract the eyes and ears of your target market. Not only are you up against larger companies with nicely funded marketing departments, you're also competing with social media and a multitude of other distractions for the attention of your prospects.
But that doesn't mean your marketing efforts have to cost a ton of money or be overly dramatic in order to stand out from the crowd. Here are five creative and inexpensive ways to market your business in a digital world:
1. Get endorsed by a local celebrity. Many business owners dream of having their product or service endorsed by a global celebrity. But instead of trying to get a superstar to support your business, try seeking out a local celebrity instead.
Who exactly are local celebrities? These are people your local paper is writing about -- perhaps an "unsung hero" such as a teacher or a resident who's doing something positive and newsworthy. Since they're in your neighborhood, these people should be relatively easy to locate and contact by phone or e-mail. Let them know you'd like to send them a gift, namely your product or service.
The only catch: you'd like to follow up with them in a few days to get their honest feedback. Their responses can make for useful blog or marketing content.

2. Create a LinkedIn group. Not only is a LinkedIn group free to create, it can enable you to offer your professional network a vibrant, useful information resource all while driving traffic to your site and increasing sales. Just don't use the platform to hard sell anyone.
It can take time and effort to get one going, but the goal should be to help provide resources and start discussions on topics that can benefit your community. Groups should also be a place for your members to network with other professionals online.
3. Get published on niche blogs. While it may be difficult to get on the front cover of a major magazine, you can create marketing strategies and opportunities by being featured in a popular niche blog. Identify three to five blogs that target your market then contact the creator and offer a few ideas of how you'd like to bring value to his or her readers. You can:
Demonstrate good will by offering the niche blog owner a small amount of your product or service for free, which they can give away to their audience as a gift. This is different than a product review, which only offers information.
Send ideas for blog posts you'd like to write and explain why they would be helpful for their readers.
Ask if you can interview them for your site. This might entice the blog manager to promote your content since it highlights his or her business.

4. Create videos for YouTube. With more than 800 million unique visitors a month, YouTube can be a powerful platform for marketing a business online. To do so, go beyond simply posting random videos of your product or sharing your thoughts.
The marketing videos you create should include the following elements:
A keyword-researched headline
A clear editorial message (don't try to accomplish too much in one video)
A call to action (tell the viewer to do something, such as subscribing to your channel)
While you can spend a small fortune on cameras, lighting equipment and editing software, the camera built into your smartphone should be able to capture suitable online video. As for editing, if you're on a Mac, for instance, you should already have iMovie in your applications. Even if you don't have a Mac you can find free software online or hire a professional editor on sites such as Fiverr.com, possibly for as little as $5 depending on the scope of the work.
5. Write an e-book about the biggest issues in your industry. No longer do you need a publishing company or thousands of dollars to get distribution for a book. Amazon, for instance, will let you upload a digital book for free, with a 33 percent take on every sale. The goal is not to make a profit from direct book sales but to use it as a lead generation tool, encouraging readers to opt into your website for further information.
Even time-strapped entrepreneurs who aren't great writers should consider this. You can search sites like E-lance or Odesk to hire an affordable ghostwriter who can help you convert your blog posts or audio recordings into book format.
When it comes to marketing your book, set the price between $1 and $5 -- which makes it affordable -- then use social media, video marketing and e-mail list marketing to promote it. To generate more leads, keep in mind that Amazon allows prospective buyers of your book to take a sneak peek of the first few pages. Be sure to embed links into these early pages so you can capture leads from people who were interested but didn't wind up buying your book.
12 Social Marketing Strategies to Grow Your Online Sales
The biggest challenge that online store owners face is increasing traffic to their ecommerce store. Knowing where to start and how to stand out from the thousands of other shops that are competing for the same traffic is a daunting challenge.
The explosion of growth in the ecommerce world has only made it tougher for ecommerce sites to attract the critical mass of visitors needed to stay in business.
In this post there I'm going to give you 12 different strategies to help you grow your online community and increase traffic to help you boost sales. Pick the strategies and tactics you find most interesting and suitable for your business and start seeing your business grow.
1. Post Daily Content for Continued Growth
One of the easiest ways to grow your social communities over time is to post content consistently. Studies have shown that different audiences react to different posting frequencies, so make sure you are testing the optimal frequency with your own audience or look at the engagement levels in comparison to posting frequencies of your competitors for some guidelines. The minimum should be once a day on Facebook and 4-6 times a day on Twitter. Also pay attention to what time of the day you post, the timing of social media is very important.
Two amazing tools which can be used to help automate this process are Swayy and Buffer. Swayy is great for finding high quality articles and news related to your industry and allows you to schedule posts to your different social networks. Buffer is a very popular app that can be integrated with your browser and dozens of other apps to help you schedule posts to your social networks. Using these apps can help you cut down your time spent on your social marketing to half an hour a day.
2. Use Images When Posting to Facebook
The best way to increase engagement on Facebook is by including images within your posts. Photos on Facebook have been shown to generate over 50% more likes than the average post. When you want to post an announcement or to promote a piece of content then include the link to the page within the post (preferably after the content so it stands out) and attach an image to the post.
Here's an example from Shopify's Facebook page last week:
Adding an image to an otherwise text-based announcement is far more compelling and will increase click-through significantly.
3. Increase Exposure of your Communities With Social Buttons
The more impressions you have on your social networks the more likely it is that you will gain more likes. The best way to dramatically increase the number of impressions on your social networks is by embedding social buttons within your site and within your marketing communications. Most blogs have social sharing buttons displayed prominently to encourage readers to share the article. Here's an example from an article by Shawn Graham in Fast Company:
Some of the places you may want to consider to place social buttons:
Launchrock is a popular free service for collecting email addresses of people who want to get early access to the launch of a new app, service or really anything. The special thing about Launchrock is that it integrates social within the subscription process which is a very powerful component that can be used to turn a regular promotion into a viral marketing channel to help drive traffic and sales.
You have probably seen a Launchrock page before, they look something like this:
After opening a free account with Launchrock you can fully customize their widget and marketing copy and then embed the widget within your promotion page on your site.
The idea is to create a give-away or some other promotion which works on friend-bring-a-friend and use the social features of Launchrock to make it viral.
Inform your visitors and social communities that in order to enter this amazing promotion they need to enter in their email address on the promotion page. After they enter in their email address, Launchrock will show them a message and social sharing buttons.
Make sure the message has a powerful incentive to get your visitors to share the promotion with their friends. Something along the lines of, “Increase your chances of winning the summer giveaway by inviting your friends to join the promotion”, or “Get 3 friends to join the promotion and all of you stand the chance of winning a bonus prize,” should help increase the share rate and thus the number of people that will get exposed to your promotion.
Within Launchrock, you have detailed analytics on the number of referrals each email brings which can help you identify the top influences. These influencers can then be contacted via email and thanked personally for their help in spreading your promotion which adds a very nice personal touch to your promotion.
5. Leverage Social Reviews to Automate Word of Mouth Marketing
Using product reviews to create trust and provide insights on your products is a great way to increase sales.
Yotpo is a popular free social review app that's available in Shopify's app store. The app helps convert over 8% of customers to reviewers through their mail after purchase email which results in a large number of reviews being created. The best part is that this process is automated so you don’t have to spend time reaching out to customers to try and get new product reviews. Here's how it works:
Yotpo’s social features allows you to connect your Twitter and Facebook accounts and post your user-generated product reviews directly to your Facebook business page or Twitter account. These reviews help bring social traffic to your product pages which in turn increases sales. For great examples of stores taking full advantage of social reviews check out the Facebook pages of RockinWellness andKollectionK.
6. Create Micro Content
We are all suffering from information overload, which means that people have less patience and less time to consume content. A growing trend among marketers which should be seriously considered by online store owners is the creation of bite sized chunks of content for quick and easy consumption.
Two great services which can be used to host such content is Soundcloud, a cloud-based sound file hosting service, and Vine, a relatively new video hosting service released by Twitter. Vine is a free mobile app that enables users to create and post 6 second video clips that can easily be shared on social networking sites.
Some brands like Urban Outfitters, Doritos, and even Nascar have started experimenting with Vine as a new tool for creating content.
Here's a Vine video that Nascar posted recently:
7. Run a Twitter Q&A
Engagement is critical to keep any online community alive and well. A great tactic to grow your Twitter community and dramatically increase engagement is by hosting a weekly Twitter Q&A. The idea is to pick a day of the week, and then encourage your community to post questions related to your product, business, industry or really anything. You then provide answers to their questions and then choose the best questions and use them in a blog post.
Over time others in the space will take part and slowly you will establish your brand as an authority in the space. Remember the mantra: No Engagement Left Behind.
Bonus tip: Pick a hashtag related to the Twitter Q&A and ask your community to use it within their tweets. This helps with branding and will help make the practice familiar to those who choose to take part. Here are some tips from Twitter UK's company blog on how to host a Twitter Q&A session.
8. Run a Pinterest Treasure Hunt
Pinterest is one of the largest social networks in the world and can be used for a wide range of marketing activities. One powerful way to use Pinterest to create buzz around your brand and product line is to use it to run a “treasure hunt” promotion.
The way the treasure hunt works is to contact a few partners and ask each of them to pin an image on one of their Pinterest boards. Each image is meant to provide clues to the next image in the treasure hunt. You get the ball rolling by publishing a blog post about the promotion and a link to the first image. Fans that get to the last image are forwarded to a hidden page where they enter in their credentials to take part in the raffle. Here's how Cottage Life Magazine hosted a Pinterest treasure hunt, you can follow their strategy as a guideline on where to start your own.
9. Experiment With Different Titles in Your Blog Posts
The title of a blog post carries a lot more weight than the average person realizes and should get as much attention as the content of the post. Here are some tips for optimizing your titles:
Use everyday language
Leverage common psychological traits (urgency, fear, desire, etc)
Keep it short
Use negatives (Don’t do this vs. do this)
If you're post is a list, start the title with how many points you're going to make
10. Make it Easy for Customers to Share and Pin Your Products
Including social sharing buttons is a must for any online store that wants to take advantage of our innate social behavior online. Make sure you include buttons to the popular social networks (Facebook, Twitter and Pinterest) and that they are not hidden away in your store’s theme.
Many choose to go in the direction of choosing buttons that match their store’s theme but this may limit the percentage of shares. Choosing colorful buttons which stand out can help improve the amount of shares which will help drive new traffic to your site.
Try and use a service like AddThis which has its own analytics and can be used to help you with finding the optimal positioning and layout.
Here's how Thomas Holmes, author of the book "Shopify & You," uses AddThis on his product page to encourage social sharing:
11. Invest in an Infographic
Over the last few years infographics have become extremely popular. Investing in a professionally designed infographic is one of the best ways to create a huge spike in traffic to your site and help you get a number of high value back links which are great for SEO. A quality infographic can cost anywhere from $100-$1,500 but it will be well worth the investment.
Spend some time researching an interesting topic in your industry and find a whole bunch points that you will cover in the infographic. An example of such an infographic might be “How much money do Americans spend during Christmas compared to the rest of the world.” This infographic could be created by almost any online store and would be general enough that many blogs and news sites would link back to it, resulting in thousands of visitors to your blog.
12. Create a Complimentary Board on Pinterest
A great way to provide additional value to your customers is by providing them with info and special deals on complimentary products which you don’t necessarily sell.
Let’s say your store sells hiking shoes and you would like to provide extra value to your customers. One of the best ways to do this is to create a complimentary board on Pinterest with a whole range of complimentary products that your customers may want to buy. The stores and other sites that you are promoting on your board will take notice of the incoming traffic from your Pinterest account and may even adopt the same strategy which will result in new incoming traffic to your store.
Connect all your marketing channels around this board and make sure you drive traffic to your Pinterest boards from your social accounts, newsletters and blog posts. Your fans will be thankful.
Conclusion
Many of the strategies mentioned in this post are very fresh and underutilized which means that if you are reading this you have a unique opportunity to take full advantage of the advice mentioned in this post.
